More Than Words (Writing Gigs From Home)

One of the few gigs that has been and continues to be most workable from home or on the road is writing.

To become a good writer, you first have to be a good reader. Make sense?

When you read other people’s work, you begin to absorb different techniques, grow your vocabulary and expand your knowledge base. Be a student of your craft until you become a master. And then, keep studying!

The first step to good writing: READ


When I read a book, I often read it at least 3 times.

The first time is for enjoyment. The second time is to catch any hints I missed. The third time is to study the author’s style of prose and storytelling technique. I can then, fold what works for me into my own style, and grow as a writer.


Practice & Apply

I have been writing since elementary school. I loved writing papers and essays. My classmates would get nervous when we had a writing assignment of so many words.  I usually exceeded the word count.

I have been looking for and taking writing gigs since the early 2000s, but the market has opened up a great deal more now. Content creators, editors, and proofreaders are in extremely high demand because all these websites need words on them somewhere.

And who better to fill them than Wordsmiths?

This is one of the reasons why I am so happy at Wealthy Affiliate. Here, I can write with purpose, with direction, and with freedom. This is what writers are looking for. And honestly, you can write about just about anything.


Social media, politics, movies, celebrity gossip, sports, childcare. It is ridiculous how much data needs to be put into words for the web browsing public’s attention. Getting and keeping that attention, now that is a whole different flavor of pie.


Writing Your Passion

I L O V E football.

I love it.

I am always so happy when football is back.

I don’t care if it’s a repeat of a game or a game I already watched. If it’s on I’m watching it.

I have been known to watch football all day.


Once upon a time, I had a dream job. I am and always have been a writer. So I submitted an article on hope and they hired me.

They didn’t just hire me, they loved me. The owner/editor installed me as a sportswriter when he realized how obsessed I am with football, MMA, and the Olympics.

That’s about it when it comes to my sports knowledge and enthusiasm, by the way. Pretty much anything else except tennis is ho-hum for me.

The Guardian Liberty Voice is based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Founder & Editor-in-Chief, DiMarkco Chandler was the best boss ever. His care and interest in his writers and editors as people is unmatched and so genuine there was pretty much nothing he couldn’t ask of me. When I worked there, I had no job. This was not work for me. It was bliss.

The only reason I am not there now is that we had bills. And being a writer is not a job you do for the pay, really. It’s akin to teaching in that way. It is a noble calling and a skill that is refined over time. Some are gifted with the ability and can influence everyone they come in contact with.

When I worked there, a lot of the positions were offered through CraigsList. It’s been 3 years and more so I’m not sure how they are recruiting these days, but I am delighted to see they are still in operation.

Unlike most other “writing jobs”, GLV doesn’t take your sample and say, “Write something else and hope you get some clicks we can pay you for”.

GLV holds intensive training sessions called Boot Camp (at least they did) designed to ensure their writers adhere to set Style & Submission Guidelines. Being there and going through Boot Camp made me a better writer, no doubt about it, and gifted me with the joy of doing what I loved for a living, if only for a short time.

But I’m Not a Journalist!

Other writing gigs are abundantly available online and off. According to the US Department of Labor:

A college degree in English, journalism, or communications is generally required for a full-time position as a writer or author. Experience can be gained through internships, but any form of writing that improves skill, such as blogging, is beneficial.

Employment of writers and authors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Strong competition is expected for full-time jobs because many people are attracted to this occupation.

If you’re not a journalist, there are positions open for tech writers, review writers, copywriters, ghostwriters. There are editing and proofreading positions.

There are also sites and publishers looking for fiction writers in all possible genres. Here is just a small sample from a quick Google search for creative writing gigs.


Businesses with Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter pages need someone to keep them up to date and relevant.  Have you seen Wendy’s Twitter?

It’s Not Just Words

Writers in today’s economy not only need to be excellent wordsmiths. They must also possess a sense of order and flow. The days of blocks of text are long over. Readers need to be entertained. Some form of interaction or distraction is required to keep them reading. It is not just about words anymore.

We need to incorporate relevant links to authority sites and engaging images. We also need to be cognizant of relevant keywords that will allow the content to appear in SERP (Search Engine Results Pages).  This overall job is not just writing, it is called Content Creation with SEO Optimization.

More Than Words…


Google has recently updated their search engine algorithm. Not only are they looking for quality content, but long-form content (like this article!). This means that longer posts tend to rank better on Google, which can generate free organic traffic for the content. Traffic can turn into revenue, and that revenue can be shared with the content creator -that would be you, the writer- unless you sold the article as a freelancer.
